Does anyone know where I can get a free appraisal or at least an opinion on the value of an antique?
I bought an antique 1940′s singer sewing machine today. It works, and is in stable condition. All the work that needs to be done to it is a refinish. I can’t pay anyone to appraise it, but I want to know how much it’s worth. I also have some books that might be worth something, so I would like to find out. If you can give an opinion, or knows someone who will do so for free, please let me know asap. Thanks!
Singers come in many flavors. It’s worth as much as a person is willing to pay. Right now, the Featherweight Singers are the rage for quilters. You get a premium price for this sturdy little portable.
I repair Singers for fun. They are great for cotton, but since the old black machines don’t have zig-zag stitching it doesn’t appeal to many modern seamstresses. You can look up the year and model your Singer was made by going on the antique Singer website. You’ll need the serial number which is usually stamped on a plate somewhere near the wheel assembly. Then, go on Craig’s list and compare what people are asking for their machines.
As for your books, check with antiquarian book exchange,

Good luck!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – The Original Movie [VHS] $7.50 You can chalk it up to good timing and a heavy dose of video-game synergy, but this 1990 hit remains the box-office champ of independent films, with a total gross of $135 million. Of course the Turtles began as a phenomenally successful Nintendo video game, so it was a given that the movie would be a hit with its target audience of rabid young video addicts. This is what comic books fans call “the… |

Aldous Huxley: A Quest for Values $49.34 In the moral vacuum and world of shifting values following World War I, Aldous Huxley was both a sensitive reflector and an articulate catalyst. This work provides a highly illuminating analysis of Huxleys evolution from skeptic to mystic. As Milton Birnbaum shows, in a perceptive interpretation of Huxleys poetry, fiction, essays and biographieswhat evolved in Huxleys moral and intellectual pilgrimage was not so much a change in direction as a shift in emphasis. Even in the sardonic Huxley of the 1920s and 1930s, there is a moral concern. In the later Huxley, there are traces of the satirical skepticism which delighted his readers in the decades preceding World War II. A man of letters, a keen observer, seeker of new ways while profoundly knowledgeable in the truths of ancient wisdom, Huxley tried to achieve a symbiotic synthesis of the best of all worlds. In clarifying and interpreting Huxleys intellectual, moral, and philosophical development, Birnbaum touches upon all the subjects that came under the scrutiny of a singularly encyclopedic mind. This book is of great worth to those interested both in Huxley the brilliant satirist and in Huxley the seeker of salvation. In his search, Huxley typified the modern quest for values. Milton Birnbaums study is an invaluable guide in that journey. His new introduction takes account of research and analysis of Huxley that has occurred since this books original publication. Milton Birnbaum is the retired Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and professor of English at American International College. He has contributed articles on English and American literature to many journals and has published satiric articles in The Chronicle of Higher Education under the logo of Higher Education, Eh? Organisational Values Guide for Leaders and Managers $106.74 A few books have been written on organisational and personal values, and this book is an attempt to contribute to bridging that gap. Clearly defined and lived values are at the core of transformational leadership and these distinguish one organisation from the next, one leader from the other and probably one country from the next. This book is meant to empower organizational leaders to critically reflect on how different their organisations are from the next and how to build strong organizational cultures. In Defense of the West: American Values Under Siege $53.3 American values and institutions are under stress, from terrorist attacks by opposing worldviews abroad to widespread domestic skepticism that American traditions are more valuable than others. In this book, Donald Devine asks whether these values can survive or be defended in a West that questions all traditions. Devine raises questions that are answered as the chapters develop, keeping readers engaged, while preventing quick dismissals of the concerns held by those not inclined to support the books thesis_that Western vision and American values are worth questioning or defending. All standard solutions are considered and are brought together in an investigation of Western values that has a traditionalist bend, but still leaves the largest questions open for the reader to contemplate_including whether American values will in fact survive. Author: Devine, Donald/ Devine, Donald J. Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 178 Publication Date: 2004/06/08 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.00 x 0.41 inches |
