What is good research before going into "major" photography / film?

I've always loved the look of "pre-instant/easy" Photography (especially sharp detail, which always seems more "real" color photos) and more movies and "home movies "Without the sound, love and identity to treat all myself (I graduated from art school and now I'm allowed to be weird for the rest of my life but I graduated in painting .. and I am a little confused about the photograph). but when I go to antique store near me that has a lot of old cameras and camera equipment is beyond me. theyre simply piled and can not understand this decade, the chamber of instant messaging or just look at what I need to do function. good books or websites that go into detail all types and how to produce pictures with you? so ill know what Im looking for? and ideas where I can buy old movies or development of equipment or send it to grow? thanks.

LOL … ok, maybe I can help, but slower than a second! Are you more interested in the cameras to take still images, or are interested in film cameras? If you want vintage camera, and then pursuing a "8mm" camera. You will see both in stores and antique shops of the economy.
