How I can know if this antique bugle or trumpet is the money?

We have a JW York & Sons (Grand Rapids, MI) cone (We think it's a horn, but could be a trumpet), serial number 18662, manufactured in 1908 or 1909. This thing looks like it is actually silver, but do not know how whether it is pure silver, silver gilt or brass. It looks exactly all the other old tarnished silver we have in the house and there is copper in color at all. It is quite heavy, but no fingerprints everywhere indicating its composition, but is old enough for what can be characterized by metal content in something not done? Is it possible that we can try at home to see if it is true? A jewelry store does not tell us anything, they have to see this mark on something before we can determine the purity of a metal. A website that can help us determine whether York & Sons never made money in these instruments would also be very grateful.

If it is not silver plate will be very different than a pound (silver) instrument, unless there is a wear plate and can see the metal base.
