Is there somewhere I can find the information that makes jewelry mean?

While I was watching Antiques Roadshow, the other day and this lady had brought in some old rings too. The evaluator examined the ring and explained that all these rings are marks which indicate things about him (besides the Karat marker). I decided to look inside my engagement ring because he never believed. My ring of 18 carats and has a strange symbol is a star with 5 points with this thing next to that kind of resembles an L, or even a pound sign. My mother thinks that is probably the mark of a jeweler. I do not know about you, because I do not know who is really the author. Is there a place I can know what the symbols inside my ring mean? Or better yet, if anyone out there know what that means. Any comment is appreciated, thanks!
