Old Vintage / antique ring question? (Especially in the metal used in it)?

While cleaning my apartment grams, I found a ring, was hidden in a paper box of jewelry. (She was placed in a nursing home, and I'm supposed to get all your vintage jewelry) I had the box without knowing what contained. The only thing is that the group was almost dark and dingy. May tarnish white gold so bad if it is not supported for years? The group has been effective in excellent shape, it was just black … Has anyone seen entering in a ring of tarnish probalby bought in the 30s and never really supported? I am not an expert, but have been through this same exercise with my jewelry Gran, and my mother. My conclusion on the very black metal stained [jewelry] dishes, is that black "tarnished" the material was made of silver or silver.
