paint came off antique wood coffee table?

I just bought an antique wood coffee table. We leaned it on its side against a metal surface and some paint came off. Why? And what do I do so that the paint doesn’t come off easily in the future?

Most antique furniture is natural wood. I am surprised it is painted. Would you consider stripping it to the natural wood?

How long do you think the paint had been on?? Could have been damp when painted–if recently.

Is the wood solid where the paint came off–not soft–as in rotting??

I would suggest taking it to an antique dealer or someone knowledgeable and let them take a look at it.
