How do you redo your room?
Hi, I live in a house with my mom and I moved in here 3 years ago. My mom picked out my furniture and decorated my room. It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s that it’s not really ME. I am into feng shai or a shabby chic antique feeling. I have a dark brown bed, side table, and dresser. My walls are painted sky blue and biege. I also have medium brown colored curtains. I want to redo my room but 1. my room is small, 2. we are in a bad economy so we can’t spend a lot and 3. I think she won’t let me change anything. Isn’t your room supposed to match your personality? I really would like some ideas on what to put in it. I also want to get some new sheets and comforters. My room is boring so I want to change it. I need some ideas…..cheap ideas please.
You’ll have to get permission from your mother first, I’m afraid, but if she lets you do it with your own money I don’t see why she would mind. See if she would mind if you painted one wall in the room a different color for an accent, or even put up an antique print wall paper on one wall. You can usually get a couple of double rolls at most discount wallpaper or paint stores for less than $10 each.
Since you like shabby chic, you’re in luck — start looking for thrift stores (the independent ones that small charities run tend to have better stuff than places like Goodwill and Salvation Army.) Also go out on Sundays to flea markets and yard sales. You can get things like lace curtains and pretty flowered sheets, throw pillows and other bedding very cheaply at places like T J Maxx, Ross, Marshalls and other discount stores. If you already have a good comforter you can make a duvet cover for it by sewing together two flat sheets on three sides. Leave the 4th side open to slide the quilt in (so it is like a big pillow case) and just tuck the extra fabric under the bottom of the mattress — that also helps keep the comforter from sliding off the bed. Use two different print sheets on each side and it will be reversible to change the look.
If your bed has a headboard you can make a slip cover to change the look by buying a pretty quilted throw or just a printed sheet and wrapping and stapling it behind the headboard. Other items you can find cheaply to change the look are old lamps – you can paint the bases and use Elmers Glue to cover old lampshades with pretty fabric. Also, an old wicker chair could be spray painted a nice color and put a print pillow on the seat. A cheap lace tablecloth can be draped over a window to make shabby chic curtains. Old fancy picture frames are easy to find at thrift stores and yard sales — get several and paint them all the same color or a mix of bright pastel colors. Put photos of yourself and friends if you want. Another source of a bunch of cheap pictures to frame is to buy a large calendar with art that you like — that’s 12 nice pictures for usually less than $10.
You don’t need a lot of money, just a little imagination and creativity, and you’ll have a room that really reflects your personality and is unique.
