Roz Jacobs Paintings and Process

Roz Jacobs Paintings and Process

$41.6

Vibrant paintings of daylight and moonlight landscapes, figures, and still lifes captivate the eye and spirit in the first publication of Roz Jacobs work. Covering 10 years during which she began serious exploration of time and memory, many of the paintings in this volume were made in southwestern France. As this rural area has been changing for the past 20 years, Jacobs has been capturing in paint the eternal qualities of the light, air and landscape that attracted the Impressionists and Fauves before her. Grounded in European tradition, she brings her unique tactile approach, creating lush semiabstract paintings. The paintings reflect a deep understanding of light, space, and composition and are a feast for the senses.Roz Jacobs recently collaborated with Laurie Weisman to create The Memory Project, a multimedia installation that explores the relationship between loss, memory and the creative process. Jacobs mother, a Holocaust survivor, narrates the art installation with riveting testimony about her brother and their attempt to escape from the Warsaw Ghetto. The Memory Project is currently touring museums in the US and internationally. Memory Project installation photos together with photos of Jacobs painting accentuate the point that the title of this volume makesthat Jacobs invites the viewer into her process. Jacobs studied with the late Norman Raeben at his Carnegie Hall studio from 19731978. Raeben, the youngest son of Sholom Alechem, studied with George Luks and Robert Henri, members of the Ashcan School. Jacobs has also written screenplays, designed sets and written books for children. She resides in NYC and part of the year in southwestern France.(Includes 48 color plates) Author: Jacobs, Roz Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 112 Publication Date: 2010/11/04 Language: English Dimensions: 8.50 x 8.50 x 0.29 inches

Paintings by Jane McNichol

Paintings by Jane McNichol

$42.84

While most people find their inspiring vistas at hilltops and roadside overlooks, painter Jane McNichol often heads for the lowlands. Her minimalist, near abstract canvasses, writes a reviewer, give us a sense of infinite openness, of clear, clean, newly oxygenated horizons such as might have occurred or existed at the birth of the world. The images collected here are a selection of paintings and monoprints that Jane McNichol has made over the last 15 years. Drawn to the deep flat spaces of the midwest, discovered on a crosscountry trip with artist friends, she arrived at her current style with the painting Lakeland (1992). Since that time, she has sought to reduce the elements of the landscapes she observes to the bare minimum. Jane McNichol continues to be intrigued by nature, as she sees it a sublime light show that plays across land, water and sky. Earlier this year Jane received a grant from the PollockKrasner Foundation in New York. Other awards include an Anna Hyatt Huntington Bronze Medal from the Catherine Lorillard Wolf Foundation and a grant from the Friends of the Contemporary Art Center in North Adams, Massachusetts. Also a MacDowell Fellow, McNichol has exhibited her paintings, prints and photographs in one person and group exhibitions in museums, galleries and juried shows across the United States. Her paintings hang in more than 40 private collections and numerous corporate ones, including Readers Digest, McGraw Hill and Wyeth Laboratories. A native of Philadelphia, McNichol earned a bachelors degree in studio arts from Temple University and studied in Rome, Italy, with Temples Tyler School of Art. Author: McNichol, Jane Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 48 Publication Date: 2006/12/01 Language: English Dimensions: 8.50 x 8.50 x 0.12 inches
