Why do people overspend (IMHO) on eBay?
I’ve been looking at iPod shuffles, the new ones that are teeny tiny OMG I can’t find it it’s that small.
On eBay they’re going for more than the price Apple is charging. I’ve seen this with other items as well that are not hard to find in stores. I know everyone does not live near a mall, but what gives?
Is there something about eBay that makes people not research the things they want to buy before they buy items that are readily available (as opposed to antiques, hard to find items, collectibles)?
I’m not knocking eBay, or the buyers and sellers – I’ve held some very successful auctions in the past, but it is strange to see what people are paying for stuff that they can go out and buy at the store without the extra fees, seller identity, etc.
Anyone out there have the experience where it was worth it to pay the extra $ for something on eBay that also was in the stores? Was it a time or a easier to buy online situation? Serious answers please.
I have done it for convenience. I work a job that is an all day thing. The last thing I want to do is go trudging through a mall at 8 p.m. Also, I buy mostly antiques and unique one of a kind items. It would take me forever and a day to find such an item here. So just like anything, a lot of people will pay a higher price for convenience sake. Especially if money is no object to begin with.

Online Auction Business Model $87.62 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The online auction business model is one in which participants bid for products and services over the Internet. The functionality of buying and selling in an auction format is made possible through auction software which regulates the various processes involved. Several types of online auctions are possible. In an English auction the initial price starts low and is bid up by successive bidders. In a Dutch auction, multiple identical items are offered in one auction, with all winning bidders paying the same price the highest price at which all items will be sold (treasury bills, for example, are auctioned this way). Currently almost all online auctions use the English auction method. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Victory Auction $65.33 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. A victory auction is a type of auction in which the bidders to purchase an object write down their bids, and the bidder with the highest bid wins, but pays the price bid by the second highest bidder. The object of a victory auction is to discourage gaming of an auction, where people propose prices less than they are willing to pay in order to pay less than the maximum price they would pay, instead the auction does this automatically, by giving the win to the highest bidder, but at the price which was the one just below theirs. Price Variations in Online Auctions $114.71 In a thick market with a large number of homogeneous goods, it is often assumed that prices tend to converge. This assumption, however, does not hold in the context of online auctions. The goal of this work is to investigate how different factors may contribute to the auction price variation in a thick market. My approach is to systematically examine both the supply and demand side. On the supply side, both seller expertise and selling strategy influence the auction price, while seller expertise also affects how sellers develop their selling strategy. Likewise, on the demand side, both bidder expertise and bidding strategy influence the auction price, while bidder expertise also affects how bidders set their bidding strategy. The effect of these factors on price tends to vary across different levels of quality uncertainty. Drawing on auction theory, signaling theory and past empirical work, this study develops a framework to guide current as well as future research in the area of online auctions. Hotels at Online Auctions $96.59 The Internet has been found a powerful tool bringing about many opportunities but also threats for nearly every industry. The new and complex variety of online distribution channels that have emerged in the last years poses a challenge for the tourism industry. Moreover, the ability of handling and choosing among them effectively has become a critical success factor for hotels. The distribution of services on online auction platforms, such as eBay, is already utilised professionally in the field of tourism. Low entry and exit barriers as well as low distribution costs are major incentives for using this distribution channel. Sales on a larger scale, however, entail increased administrative efforts. For this reason online auction tools have been developed with the aim of facilitating auction management for sellers. For this study 1,074 auctions of Austrian accommodation offers on eBay, being sold by 68 different hotels from all over Austria, have been analysed in order to identify the most important success factors for selling hotel offers via this distribution channel. Vickrey Auction $71.7 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A Vickrey auction is a type of sealedbid auction, where bidders submit written bids without knowing the bid of the other people in the auction. The highest bidder wins, but the price paid is the secondhighest bid. The auction was created by William Vickrey. This type of auction is strategically similar to an English auction, and gives bidders an incentive to bid their true value. Vickreys original paper considered only auctions where a single, indivisible good is being sold. In this case, the terms Vickrey auction and secondprice sealedbid auction are equivalent, and are used interchangeably. When multiple identical units (or a divisible good) are being sold in a single auction, the most obvious generalization is to have all winning bidders pay the amount of the highest nonwinning bid. This is known as a uniform price auction. The uniformprice auction does not, however, result in bidders bidding their true valuations as they do in a secondprice auction unless each bidder has demand for only a single unit.
