Faux fireplace?

We just moved into a small apt (rented) and the show is pure white. Im thinking about painting (must be NETural dramatic color not because of the location), but it's a fake fireplace and I'm not sure how to go about the whole project. I Leave the same color as the walls, hair must be in color this as the face of it, use a technique like ????? For now everything is antique white. The fireplace was a time of gas (there is still a connector small enough to see), but we have some decorative candles in it. It is also hollow and almost "spackle" (not sure if thats the right), general advice, ideas, suggestions would be great.
