I want to know about painting over gloss?

I have skirting boards and doors that are glossed but they need to be re-done. Is it true that i need to sand them thoroughly before ican re-gloss them? Also i want to paint an old coffee table i have with white paint then do something (i’m not sure what?!) to give it a french chic antique style look if you know what i mean?! How do i achieve this?
what does prime then paint mean? I’m a woman!

At least lightly abrade your old paintwork with a P80 grade abrasive paper. This is because your old gloss is hard and non-absorbant and the new paint needs those scratches to hold onto the surface.

Primer is a purpose made paint for bare and sometimes problem surfaces. You do not need a primer on previously painted woodwork.

After at least a light rub down you have a choice.

Apply one undercoat, followed by one gloss coat.

or, apply two coats of Dulux Satinwood (Satin finish).

You need a one and two inch paintbrush and a 4 inch foam roller kit for the doors.

You may see advertised ‘one coat’ paint, but this is really only to be used if you don’t really care.

Try to buy Dulux. Cheaper paint false economy.

You will have another choice. Water or oil-based paints. Oil-based better quality, but longer between coats and stronger smelling while drying. Water based, quicker drying times, less smell, but weaker paint and will not last so long. If you have babies in the house can often be the deciding factor. You can tell if your paint is water or oil-based by looking on the tin. If it says thin and clean brushes with water, its water based, if it says thin and clean brushes with white spirit, it’s oil based.
